TMS and Depression

When a patient experiences one or more major depressive episodes it is considered a major depressive disorder (MDD). Little is known about the neurophysiology of MDD.

Concurrent rTMS with drugs for the treatment of non-drug-resistant MDD has been shown to hasten the response to antidepressant medications in these patients (Rossini et al. 2005, Rumi et al. 2005), which can sometimes take weeks. However, rTMS has mainly been studied as an adjunctive treatment in medication-resistant depressive patients.

An FDA approval determined in October 2008 that a rTMS device did not require a premarket approval application for the treatment of Major Depressice Disorder in adult population who have failed to achieve satisfactory improvement from one prior antidepressant medication at or above the minimal effective dose and duration in the current episode. According to the FDA's own website, the FDA concluded that this device, and substantially equivalent devices of this generic type, should be classified into class II under the generic name of Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) System.
